Globe theatre

It was a warm autumn day in 2010 , and Tobi Bohn was walking through London with his family! Suddenly this strange building appeared :

After recognizing that my older sister got very excited as if she had a coffee and sugar trip at the same time I realized that we arrived at the Globe Theatre of London!

This is a replica of an Elizabethan Theatre out of the 16th century! In such buildings the plays of Shakespeare were shown! To show you the whole bulding I have insert a little photo of a model of the Globe Theatre, which were in the Museum of Shakespeare, which is at the Globe Theatre :

A theatre, which looks like this, is called Elizabethan Theatre.  They appeared in the 16th century, while the culture of Britian flourished! In 1599 the Globe Theatre of London was build at the thames in the quarter called  “Bankside” . “Bankside” was the amusement centre of London, with many theatres but also arenas, where for example people fought against bears!

The Lord’s Chamberlain’s Mens, was a group of actors, with Shakespeare as a member of the group. They build the Globe Theatre as a joint venture, where everybody got money from the profit of the theatre. The plays of Shakespeare and other authors were shown in the theatre , and it got very famous, although the shows were a bit strange in our eyes. The plays did not use any scenery but wonderful costumes, music and real weapons (if necessary).  Out of this tradition an accident happend.  In 1613 the Globe Theatre burned down, because of a shot in the roof from a real canon, which were used in the play “Henry VIII. “.  After rebuilding it , the the Globe was closed because of the puritarian republic in 1642. After a few years, the Globe was destroyed and the place was used for mansions.

The special building of the theatre was a positive effect on the audience.  No place had a distance of more than 20 meters to the stage, which caused that every spectatore was very close to the actors.  It was a round building, with 3 stations for visitors. The yard was the cheapest opportunity to be a spectator of the play.  You had to pay one penny, to get into the Globe and then you were standing right in front of the actors. The seated places were under a roof, and you had 3 levels.  For every higher level you had to pay one penny more. The rich people bought a seat in the loge.

The stage is also under a roof, which is painted, because it’s the heaven.  It can be used for plays.

Under the stage is a cellar, which can also be used in plays , as a scenery for the hell.  The two pillars were also used in plays as scenery.  Today there is a replica of the building, which were built in 1997. Still today the plays of Shakespeare get presented in the “new” Globe.  The Globe with his plays is so famous, that the plays are sold out for years!

The Globe is different to modern theatres, because mostly they use scenery in their plays. Also the building is different to a modern theatre. The Globe is built like an O, a modern theare is created like to parallel lines where the spectator has distance to the actors. In the Globe, this distance is very small, so that the spectators feel like a member of the play. In the plays of Shakespeare, the audience get into the play, because sometimes an actor asks the spectators questions, like they would be a friend of him, who is standing next to him.

So friends and fellows, I hope you have know a little knowledge about the “Globe” and be excited, in a few years I will stand on the stage!  In autumn I had my chance to train a bit 😉 Unfortunately only in front of the stage, but you will see!

Keep clean, friends and fellows! =)

Yours sincerley, Sir Tobias lfm. Bohn
